"Exploring the Roots of Hoedowns, Reels and Frolics"
The Friends of the North Carolina Room at Pack Memorial Library are pleased to present Phil Jamison for a journey into the past with stories – and a little music – telling the history of southern Appalachian dance from cakewalks to clogging, from the Shoo-fly Swing to the Virginia Reel. Jamison will delve into the origin of these dance forms, tracing the forms from their European, African American, and Native American roots to the modern day. On the way he will explore the powerful influence of black culture, showing how practices such as calling dances as well as specific kinds of steps combined with white European forms to create distinctly “American” dances
This free program will be held in Lord Auditorium at Pack Memorial Library, 67 Haywood Street in downtown Asheville.
