On Saturday, May 9, at 3:00 pm (EDT), I will be giving an interactive online presentation, "Square Roots: The Southern Appalachian Square Dance," hosted by The Handmade Music School and The Floyd Country Store.
In this presentation, using archival images and videos as illustrations, I will discuss the multicultural roots and historical development of the southern Appalachian square dance. Like the music of the Appalachian region, these dances are a hybrid of earlier European, African, and Native American traditions, and they reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of the southern mountains. Please join me to learn about these dances, which are an integral part of the southern Appalachian music tradition. Here’s how to register and join us.
If you are not available for the live broadcast on Saturday, a recorded version, for you to watch at your convenience, will be available online at Crowdcast.
